Celebrating Singapore’s 61st National Day - A Gift of Health, Hope & Legacy

Celebrating Singapore’s 61st National Day
A Gift of Health, Hope & Legacy
As Singapore celebrates her 61st National Day this August, I found myself reflecting on my own journey over the past 24 years.
Recently, while clearing my warehouse, I came across several unopened copies of A Different Sun—a poem and photo essay on childhood cancer that I helped produce in 2002 to raise funds for the KK Outreach to Kids (KKOK) Fund.
Holding the book once again brought back many precious memories.
It reminded me of a time when poets, photographers, designers, publishers, volunteers and sponsors came together with one common purpose—to bring hope to children and families facing one of life’s greatest challenges.
That was the true spirit of gotong royong.
One year later, in 2003, I joined the National Cancer Centre Singapore as Manager of the Cancer Research and Education Fund.
One of the projects closest to my heart was helping develop the Firstlight Campaign for Cancer Awareness.
The name Firstlight was chosen very deliberately.
The first light of dawn breaks through the darkness and reminds us that night does not last forever.
That was the heart of the campaign.
We wanted to replace fear with understanding, despair with hope, and remind people that even a cancer diagnosis is not always the end of the story.
Knowledge brings light.
Understanding brings courage.
Hope gives us strength to face tomorrow.
Working alongside dedicated doctors, researchers and community partners, we also launched Apples Against Cancer, encouraging Singaporeans to embrace healthier lifestyles and reminding people that prevention is always better than cure.
Looking back today, I realise that although my work has taken different forms over the years, my purpose has never changed.
It has always been about helping people live healthier, better lives through education, prevention and practical natural wellness.
That journey led me to establish Elixir Botanica in 2008.
Then, in 2017, another significant milestone was reached when Health Canada approved the Natural Product Licences for VigourCells™ Network Antioxidants and French Maritime Pine Bark Extract.
To me, these have never been just products.
They represent years of learning, scientific research, perseverance and a heartfelt desire to help people care for the bodies God has entrusted to them.
Then, in June 2024, life took an unexpected turn.
I suffered a severe bilateral cerebellar stroke.
Humanly speaking, I should not have survived. Yet by God’s grace, my life was preserved. Today, I am fully recovered and living even more purposefully than before.
During that season, everything I had believed in and shared for many years became deeply personal.
The principles of healthy living, good nutrition and daily stewardship were no longer simply things I recommended—they became part of my own journey of healing, recovery and renewed gratitude for every day that God gives.
Looking back today, I can see God’s faithful hand weaving every chapter of my life into one continuous story.
A Different Sun reminds me that even in our darkest moments, hope still shines.
Firstlight reminds me that the first rays of light can pierce even the deepest darkness, replacing fear with hope and reminding us that we need not live in fear—even of death itself.
Apples Against Cancer reminds us that the choices we make today can help shape our tomorrows.
Elixir Botanica continues that same journey by encouraging people to steward their health faithfully every single day.
One speaks to the heart.
One brings light to the mind.
One supports the body.
Together, they tell one story.
A story of hope overcoming fear.
A story of light overcoming darkness.
A story of God’s faithfulness through every season of life.
As Singapore celebrates her 61st National Day, I would like to share not just these gifts, but the journey behind them. It is my way of giving thanks to God, and of giving back to a nation that has given me so much.

❤️ A Small Request
A Different Sun was first published in 2002 to raise funds for the KK Outreach to Kids (KKOK) Fund in support of children with cancer.
Although the stories in this book were written more than two decades ago, the challenges faced by children with cancer and their families have not changed. Their journey, their hopes and their needs remain just as real today.
If reading this book touches your heart, I would encourage you to consider making a donation directly to the Children’s Cancer Foundation Singapore.
I will not be collecting any donations myself. My hope is simply that this little book may continue to inspire kindness, generosity and hope—just as it was intended to do when it was first published.
Some stories never grow old because the people they speak for still need our compassion today.

As Singapore celebrates another year of nation-building, my prayer is that we will continue to embrace the spirit of gotong royong—caring for one another, sharing what we have learnt, and doing our part to build a healthier, kinder and stronger nation.
Because in the end, the greatest legacy we leave is not what we accumulate, but what we contribute to the lives of others.
As Scripture reminds us,
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.”
— James 1:17
May we receive God’s gifts with gratitude, steward them wisely, and use them to bless the lives of others.
Happy 61st National Day, Singapore!
With gratitude,
Rosemary Chng
